How long do wave perms last?

I have medium dark brown hair that's at a little past my shoulders. I really love the big wave look, so is a wave perm worth it, or should I just stick to curling my hair? My hair really isn't damaged at all. Also, how long do wave perms last? And would it look okay with shoulder length hair, or should I grow it out some more?
